When testing fuel injectors on a test bench to determine whether they are Good or Bad, international standards (such as ISO 8984) rely on the following engineering criteria:
| Parameter | Technical Term | Description / Pass-Fail Standard |
| Flow Rate | Fuel Delivery Flow | Measures the volume of fuel injected within a specific timeframe under various conditions (Idle, Part Load, Full Load). Must fall within OEM specifications. |
| Return Flow | Back-leakage / Return Volume | Measures the amount of fuel returning to the tank. Excessive back-leakage indicates internal wear (e.g., control valve wear in Common Rail injectors). |
| Atomization | Spray Pattern Quality | Visual or optical evaluation. The fuel must form a fine, symmetrical, and homogeneous mist. No solid streams or uneven streaks are allowed. |
| Sealing | Seat Leakage / Static Tightness | The injector tip and body must hold a specific pressure for a designated time without any fuel seepage, weeping, or dripping. |
| Opening Pressure | Nozzle Opening Pressure (NOP) | The precise pressure at which the needle valve lifts. Deviation from the specification alters injection timing and combustion. |
| Electrical Integrity | Solenoid / Piezo Resistance | Measures the electrical resistance ($Omega$) of the internal coil or actuator. Must not be open-circuit, short-circuit, or shorted-to-ground. |
| Response Time | Injector Response Time (IRT) | The latency between the electrical signal pulse and the actual mechanical opening/closing of the needle. |
