The HP0 is an early-generation, heavy-duty common rail pump. Unlike compact modern pumps that use a small internal cam, the HP0 actually looks and operates somewhat like a traditional mechanical inline pump. It features a built-in camshaft, mechanical pumping elements for each cylinder line, and utilizes dual PCVs (Pump Control Valves) to electronically meter high-pressure fuel into the common rail. It is built strictly for high-mileage, heavy-tonnage commercial commercial vehicles.
When this pump experiences internal mechanical wear or electrical valve failure, you will notice:
Severe Loss of Power Under Load: The truck cannot maintain highway speeds or carry full cargo capacity because the pump fails to meet maximum fuel volume demands.
White Exhaust Smoke & Long Crank Times: Low initial rail pressure during cranking causes poor fuel atomization, leading to unburnt fuel tracking out of the exhaust when it finally starts.
Intermittent Stalling at Idle: The engine dies suddenly when idling or slowing down for a stop, often accompanied by fluctuating RPMs.
On Isuzu diagnostic tools (like the Tech 2 or G-IDSS), look out for these fault codes:
Flash Code 225 / DTC P0087 or P0088: Fuel Rail Pressure Too Low / Too High.
Flash Code 227 / DTC P0093: Large Fuel System Leak Detected (often triggered when the pump cannot keep up with required rail target pressures under heavy acceleration).
DTC P1211 / P1212: Pump Control Valve (PCV) 1 or 2 Circuit Malfunction (pointing directly to an electrical fault on the pump's control heads).
No. The dual PCVs located on top of the pump assembly can be unbolted and replaced independently. If your truck is throwing specific circuit codes for PCV 1 or PCV 2, or experiencing minor pressure hunting at idle, replacing the faulty valve is standard practice and saves significant repair costs over swapping the entire mechanical body.
Important: Always change both PCVs at the same time if the truck has very high mileage, as they wear at virtually identical rates.
Mechanical Timing Calibration. Because the Denso HP0 pump utilizes an internal camshaft that is synchronized with the engine's injection cycles, this pump must be strictly timed to the engine gear train during installation. Unlike some newer common rail pumps that can be bolted on in any position, misaligning the timing marks on the HP0 pump drive gear will cause the high-pressure pulses to hit out of sync with the fuel injectors, resulting in severe engine vibration, lack of power, or a total no-start condition.
