A: It is a DENSO HP3 type high-pressure supply pump. It uses a dual-plunger design driven by a three-lobe cam to continuously deliver high-pressure diesel to the common rail. It relies on an integrated Suction Control Valve (SCV) on the inlet side to regulate rail pressure.
A: When this pump degrades or fails, the truck will typically exhibit:
Limp Mode / Power Drastically Reduced: The engine ECU limits RPMs to protect the system.
Hard Starting or No-Start (When Hot): Internal wear prevents the pump from building the minimum required cranking pressure (~20-25 MPa) to fire the injectors, especially when the fuel is hot and thin.
Engine Surging or Erratic Idle: The engine RPM hunts up and down due to unstable rail pressure.
Sudden Stalling: The engine cuts out under heavy load or acceleration.
A: On Isuzu diagnostic scanners (like Tech 2 or G-IDSS), you will usually pull these codes:
P0088: Fuel Rail Pressure Too High (often a stuck SCV).
P0089: Fuel Pressure Regulator Performance (pressure deviates from target).
P0093: Large Fuel System Leak Detected (can be triggered if the pump cannot maintain target pressure under load).
P1093 / P1094: Fuel Pressure Low During Light/Heavy Load.
A: Not necessarily. A surging idle or intermittent pressure spike is most frequently caused by a sticky or worn Suction Control Valve (SCV) rather than mechanical pump failure.
Diagnostic Tip: Remove the SCV and check for fine metal debris. If there are no metal shavings, replacing just the SCV component can solve the issue. If you find bright metal flakes, the internal plungers of the pump are flaking, and the entire pump must be replaced along with a system flush.
A: Fuel contamination. The DENSO HP3 relies completely on diesel fuel for its internal lubrication. Water contamination destroys the fuel film, leading to immediate metal-on-metal friction, overheating, and metal flaking. Poor quality fuel or worn fuel filters allow abrasive particles to score the precision plungers, causing internal pressure loss.
